“Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children.” – William Makespace Thackeray.
I’m not religious, but I firmly believe in this quote. Growing up, I was a HUGE momma’s boy. My mom was everything to me. She had the tough talks with me, disciplinarian when she needed to be, and best friend when called for it. She raised two boys during a time when drugs and crime ran rampant through the neighborhood and through it all, she stood strong and ended up raising two great sons. Thank you mom!
My lady is currently 34 weeks pregnant with our first child; a first for both of us. I’ve been lucky that her pregnancy to this point has been smooth. I think it’s a testament to her personality; she’s a calm soul. Nothing really riles her up. Well, nothing except football and UFC. That’s when her inner animal comes out and she turns into one of the guys. “GET IN THE ENDZONE!!! REAR NAKED CHOKE!!!!” Yeah, that’s my girl alright. You know what’s been the best part? She hasn’t changed one bit. You hear all the horror stories about pregnancy making women go crazy with the hormonal changes, the cravings, the aches and the pains. She’s had all of that, but luckily, she’s been a champ. Cravings? Premium seltzer water, cheesecake, and hamburgers. Aches and pains? Not until recently. Hormonal changes? Well, this one is tricky. She’s gone through all the stages and now she’s been in the nesting stage for about 31 of the 34 weeks..LMAO! I’m kidding. No, I’m not. Maybe a little. Ok, I’m not kidding.
Funny story: I was trying to convince her to go to Paris for a 4-day getaway with her sister. My argument was “Remember, this will probably be the last trip you take until the baby is at least 6 months to a year old, so if your doc gives the ok, do it!”. After some back and forth, she decided to go. While she’s out and about in Paris, my best friend texts me and says, “Have you seen your girl on Instagram?” I replied “No, what’s she up to?” I get on her Instagram page and there she is in the middle of Paris, on a pedicab, going 50 miles an hour, holding on for dear life, but having the time of her life. It was hilarious, and I could not stop laughing. She had other videos and pictures of her trips to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and a bunch of other adventures. All of this while she was 6+ months pregnant! All I could do was smile and appreciate the fact that she was having a blast on another continent while carrying our child.
Fun fact: My daughter already has two stamps on the passport and she hasn’t even been born! We took a trip to Vancouver in August and then France in October. Already a world traveler!
Anyway, this is about mama, not baby (she’s already spoiled!). This post is to show my appreciation to the woman who is carrying our child. You’re going to be a fantastic mom. Our daughter is lucky to have someone like you that is going to be taking care of her, playing with her, teaching her, and raising her. We are a team, but no team is complete without a star player. You are the star.
